Once upon a time, King Sony said to his people, “There shall be a new flagship, and she will be crafted of the finest wood of the land. We will fly her sails of bio-cellulose high, and those who ride her will be comforted by the soft touch of lambskin upon them. And we shall call her… the MDR-R10.”

Unfortunately, only but a few of the king’s people could afford the $4000 pricetag that this flagship from a bygone era demanded. But fortunately the king has learned from the err of his ways, and a new, sleek, incredibly comfortable flagship with improved technology can be enjoyed by all. And we shall call her… the MDR-Z7.

These headphones are pretty notorious for sounding completely awful out of the box. Oh wait, maybe I shouldn’t be saying that…

Actually though, after a period of burn-in the sound gets pretty darn good and the midrange starts to show up a little more. Give ‘em a chance, they may surprise you!
